Sebha University and Institutional and Program Accreditation

Sebha University is the largest university in southern Libya, located in Sebha city, the largest city in southern Libya. It is located a few kilometers away from Sebha International Airport. The university originally started as the Faculty of Education – Sebha Branch, established in 1976 as part of Tripoli University. In early 1983, Decision No. 187 of 1983 was issued by the former General People’s Committee to establish Sebha University as an independent university to serve the municipalities of southern Libya.

Initially, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Science were established, followed by the Faculties of Human Medicine, Agriculture, Engineering and Technology, Economics, and Accounting, until the number of faculties in the university reached twenty-two faculties, distributed across southern regions, in addition to seven different research centers. Currently, the university has over 25,000 students, more than 1,300 faculty members, and 3,500 staff.

In 2020, the university obtained institutional accreditation from the National Center for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Educational and Training Institutions. This center is one of the main pillars of the Ministry of Education’s reform and development efforts in Libya. Its responsibility is to promote quality culture, develop and improve local standards that meet international standards, and accredit educational and training institutions to enhance their outcomes.

Regarding institutional and programmatic accreditation for the faculties, the faculty of Engineering and Technology at the university attained institutional accreditation from the National Center for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Educational and Training Institutions in 2020, which is valid for three years. The Faculty of Science also achieved institutional accreditation from the center in 2020.
