The establishment of the Computer Department was coincident with the establishment of the College of Science, but at the beginning it was combined with the departments of Mathematics and Statistics under the name of Mathematical Sciences, the actual establishment of the Computer Department was in the year 1985, and after it became a separate department in itself to meet the needs of the various sectors of the Libyan society of competencies And the required expertise in the field of computer, the department accompanied the development and progress that computer science witnessed. Breakfast and updated its curricula, curricula and teaching methods, and sought to prepare and qualify distinguished scientific cadres with high efficiency capable of competing in the labor market.
