Abstract

The field study aimed to identify the main motivations that drive the desire of young people in Arab societies, including Algeria, to migrate illegally. They take extremely dangerous and illegal routes for the sole purpose of leaving their homeland for reasons that remain unknown, even if this leads to imprisonment or certain death. The study was conducted on young people in the state of Bejaia in Algeria. The sample included 60 respondents of different ages who were approached intentionally to identify the reasons for their interest in migration in general and the extent of their inclination towards illegal migration in particular. By combining descriptive and comparative approaches and in-depth interviews, important results were reached, namely: There is a relationship between professional and family instability and the desire to migrate, as well as a relationship between weak social and political participation and the desire to migrate. There is also a relationship between the legalization of immigration requirements and the rise in illegal immigration. Finally, there is a relationship between the spread of negative ideas about social and economic reality as modern social values among young people and the rise in the desire for illegal immigration.
