Armed Conflicts and Climate Change in the African Sahel Region and Their Implications on the Migration Issue: A Case Study of Morocco

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the relationship between climate change, armed conflicts in the Sahel region, and their impact on the issue of migration. The paper focuses on Morocco and its national strategy to combat irregular migration, using it as a case study to address a central question: the impact of security and climate transformations in the Sahel region on the increase in migration flows to Morocco. Morocco was chosen as the focus of this study due to the transformations it has undergone concerning migration. It shifted from being a transit point for African migrants from the Sahel and Sub-Saharan countries to Europe, to adopting a public migration policy as the first country in the Arab and African regions. The research concludes that, despite the efforts made, the issue of integration within Moroccan society still poses security and societal challenges. The paper presents several recommendations in this regard.
