Abstract

The history of the Libyan jihad includes many figures who led the resistance movement against the European Italian colonialism, and made all the great sacrifices for their national cause, which is the liberation of their country from it. Among these figures is the Mujahid Ahmed Al-Sharif Al-Sanusi, who faced many difficult and harsh conditions after his return to his country following the failure of the campaign he launched against the British forces in Egypt, which was the reason for his departure to the Ottoman Empire, in order to obtain material and moral support for his national cause. He had relationships with a number of Turkish figures, especially Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, but this relationship was the reason for his departure from Turkey when the British pressured him and forced him to do so after a stay that lasted six years. Then he moved to Syria and from there to the Hijaz, where he settled, and had good relationships with its princes. He continued to support the jihad movement, taking advantage of these relationships, but all his attempts to return to his country were unsuccessful. He remained in the Hijaz until his death on March 10, 1933 AD. His death had great repercussions in the Arab and Islamic world, and Most poets mourned him in long elegies, and newspapers published at the time also praised his great role in resisting colonialism. Italy was also happy about his death because of the threat he posed to its presence in Libya.
