Who We Are

The Centre was established in 2006 based on Ministry of Higher Education Decision No. 23 and became one of the university’s official centres. Its establishment was pursuant to the agreement signed between the British Council and the former Popular Committee for Higher Education and Scientific Research. Initially, the centre attracted a respectable number of Sebha University students in a limited number of classes. As student numbers and classes increased, a new building (the current one) was allocated to accommodate the larger enrolment, and training programmes were introduced for faculty members, postgraduate students, and teaching assistants.

In a further step, its activities expanded to include teaching employees of public and private institutions, in addition to those wishing to learn English at their own expense.

The centre brought together national and international experts from the British Council, supported by qualified national teaching staff, each according to their specialisation, from its inception until the beginning of the revolution.

Centre Mission

  • The centre’s mission is to teach living languages to community members, enabling them to communicate effectively with native speakers both locally and abroad through developing the core language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and then writing.
  • Supervising seminars and conferences by providing translation services to and from Arabic, whether simultaneous or written.
  • Supporting the preparation, proofreading, and correction of research papers, master’s and doctoral theses, and graduation certificates, so that students or institutions can avoid spelling or translation errors.

Centre Facilities

  • A lecture theatre equipped with modern technical means, with a capacity of 400 seats distributed between the main hall and balcony.
  • The centre includes nine classrooms equipped with audiovisual aids, each accommodating 20 to 30 students.
  • A library equipped with audiovisual materials, in addition to a large number of textbooks, curricula, and modern dictionaries.
  • The centre provides internet connectivity services throughout teaching hours.

The centre offers English language instruction at four levels: beginner, intermediate, upper-intermediate, and advanced. Each student undergoes a placement test, and based on the results, they are classified accordingly. Upon completing the course, students receive an A2 certificate.

Registration, Admission, and Renewal

Registration and renewal at the centre proceed according to the regulations set by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, following the same academic calendar applied to university faculties.

Target groups for English and other language courses include:

  • Teaching assistants at colleges affiliated with Sebha University
  • Postgraduate students (Master’s or PhD), whether sponsored internally or externally
  • University faculty members
  • University employees
  • Self-funded students
  • Public institutions
  • Private institutions
  • Foreign companies

Special Courses

Regarding special courses offered to public institutions, companies, and others, these are tailored according to the contracting party’s requirements. Courses range from beginner to advanced levels based on the placement test conducted after registration.

The centre also provides preparatory courses for the IELTS examination.

Teaching Staff

The centre’s teaching team includes a select group of male and female instructors holding Master’s degrees. They have been trained by native English-speaking teachers from the UK, alongside distinguished teaching assistants and postgraduate candidates specialising in the field.

Centre’s Future Vision

The centre’s administration aspires for the Sebha University Language Centre to be distinguished in terms of performance and the linguistic quality of its graduates. It aims to become a global scientific beacon, enabling the administration of IELTS, TOEFL, and other international examinations within this scientific establishment in the near future, transcending its traditional role.

Currently, the centre administers British Council-approved KIT and BIT exams.

In conclusion, the centre is now capable of contracting with public and private entities alongside its core function of preparing postgraduate students for their studies. The centre is also authorised to supervise private institutions teaching English, preparing reports concerning their performance and legitimacy in the educational field, and cooperating with entities deemed suitable for partnership by verifying and training their teaching staff.
