Abstract
كانت ولاية طرابلس الغرب تعاني ظلماً شديداً من الأسبان وفرسان القديس يوحنا ، وفي عام 1551م تمكنت القوات العثمانية من احتلال ولاية طرابلس الغرب بقيادة الوالي مراد أغا، وتوجه الريس طرغوت باشا إلى الأستانة عاصمة الدولة العثمانية لشرح أوضاع الولاية عامة والمسلمين الليبيين خاصة ، أدى إلى الإسراع في إرسال المزيد من الأسطول العثماني إلي مياه الشمال الإفريقي ، ولم يكتف الريس طرغوت بطرد فرسان القديس يوحنا من ولاية طرابلس الغرب ، بل التمس من السلطان سليمان القانوني تكليف الأسطول بتحرير وهران وبجاية وتونس بعد الانتهاء من طرابلس الغرب وضمها إلى ملكه، وقد اقتنع السلطان العثماني ، بوجهة نظر الريس طرغوت باشا ، من هذا المنطلق فإن العثمانيين ظلوا غرباء عن الليبيين طوال الفترة التي امتدت 1551-1606م باستثناء فترة الوالي طرغوت باشا ، الذي كان عادلا ومخلصا، وقدم حياته دفاعا عن ليبيا.
