Department of Food Science and Technology

About

The Department of Food Science and Technology was established under the name of the Department of Food Industries, where planning began to be established with the start of the establishment of the Higher Institute of Technology under Law No. (69) for the year 1976 AD, which included a specialist in environmental science and medical laboratories. The Food Industries Department was established two years after the establishment of the Institute, which It was merged according to Resolution No. 745 regarding the restructuring of universities issued in 1991 with the Higher Engineering School of Sebha University under the name of the College of Engineering and Technical Sciences in Brak.

The Department of Food Science and Technology is one of the vital departments that provide the student with science and knowledge that illuminates his path in all aspects of his life, whether in the field of his work that will be practiced or the service of his community in which he lives, so the graduate of this section is qualified to work in government and private agencies and institutions related to quality analysis and control Food safety or those concerned with planning meals, and the graduate of this section has the ability to raise the community’s food culture and awareness, and to improve and reduce wrong food practices.

This department has been keen since its inception to provide the appropriate scientific and academic environment for students through equipping scientific laboratories with scientific devices and equipment and chemicals and supporting the department with distinguished scientific cadres and working to open the horizon of cooperation with all civil society institutions and thus the Food Industries Department has a good reputation due to the efficiency of its members and the credibility Work in it.

The department offers two academic programs, one for the awarding of a bachelor’s degree and the other for the awarding of a master’s degree in food science and technology. 139 students currently studying in the department are studying in the department and 31 male and female students are in the master’s stage, carrying out their research projects in the department’s laboratories.

Department goals

  1. The Department of Food Science and Technology aims to develop the capabilities of learners to meet the community's need for various food specialties, whether in the field of food processing and preservation and human nutrition or food safety and quality, through theoretical and practical courses and curricula that are presented to students that the department is keen to develop and continuously update.
  2. One of the tasks of this section is to qualify and prepare students at all levels to be able to follow-up and continue their educational achievement through graduate studies programs, scientific research or application in government and private factories.
  3. This section also aims to serve the community by giving scientific advice to food factories, and by providing educational and educational consultations and lectures that contribute to spreading food culture among the community members, as well as by conducting training courses, seminars, conferences and scientific exhibitions.
