Descriptions of English grammar subjects

Grammar is a systematic account of how certain features of a language function in the writing and speech of users of that language, therefore, the syllabus is designed as a comprehensive guide to the workings of the English Language, with definitions of key terms and concepts in grammar to help the students to identify and use grammatical rules. The course is divided into four semesters, each of which covers important topics. Idea for all those keen to improve of written and spoken English.

English Grammar I  (Eng. 102)                                                                        2 Credits

This course gives the student the explanations and practice that are suitable for college level of English. It gives him/her lots of practice and clear explanations for some of the pronouns, articles, determiners, word-classes, prepositions, sentence structure, present tenses. It helps students to develop their knowledge and understanding of English grammar(the rules that say how words are combined, arranged and changed to show different meaning. It also helps students to develop their knowledge and understanding of English grammar rules practice using Dictionaries.

English Grammar 2 (Eng. 107)                                                                        2 Credits

This course gives the student the explanations and practice that are suitable for college level of English. It gives him/her lots of practice and clear explanations for some of the state verbs and event (action or dynamic) verbs, present perfect, and present perfect continuous, future continuous and future perfect the basic contrasts:

It aims to help students to develop their knowledge and understanding of English grammar (the rules that say how words are combined, arranged and changed to show different meaning. Also, it helps students to practice more grammatical activities and to check their understanding of English Grammar.

English Grammar 3 (Eng. 212)                                                                 2 Credits

This course gives the student the explanations and grammar practice that are suitable for college level of English Grammar practise. It gives him/her lots of grammatical practice and clear explanations for some of the verbs, prepositions linking words, Punctuation and spelling…etc.

The course explores learners’ problems and mistakes and provide more explanations and practice. Help students to practice more grammatical activities and to check their understanding of English Grammar. The course also helps the students to develop their knowledge and understanding of English grammar rules practice using Dictionaries. To explore learners’ problems and mistakes and provide more explanations and practice.

English Grammar 4 (Eng. 217)                                                                          2 Credits

This course gives the student the explanations and grammar practice that are suitable for college level of English Grammar practise. It gives him/her lots of grammatical practice and clear explanations for some of articles, modal auxiliary verbs, direct speech and reported speech, conjunctions and relative clauses, linking words and phrases. The course helps students to develop their knowledge and understanding of English grammar. Special attention should be paid to focus on grammar practice (the rules that say how words are combined, arranged and changed to show different meaning. Help students to develop their knowledge and understanding of English grammar rules practice using dictionaries, and explores learners’ problems and mistakes and provide more explanations and practice.

Descriptions of reading comprehension subject

 

Reading Comprehension 1 (Eng. 103)                                                              2 Credits

This course develops reading skills, builds vocabulary, and makes reading more enjoyable. The reading passages are taken not only from magazines and newspapers, but also from popular classic stories. These extracts, specially adapted for learners of English, provide a practical way to introduce extensive reading into the classroom.

The course helps students feel more confident reading in English, and develop strategies for reading difficult texts. It aims to develop key reading skills such as predicting, scanning, and identifying main ideas and to develop reading fluency and encourage reading for pleasure..

 

Reading Comprehension 2 (Eng. 108)                                                               2 Credits

This course develops reading skills, builds vocabulary, and makes reading more enjoyable. The reading passages are taken not only from magazines and newspapers, but also from popular classic stories. These extracts, specially adapted for learners of English, provide a practical way to introduce extensive reading into the classroom. This course helps students feel more confident reading in English, and develop strategies for reading difficult texts. Develop key reading skills such as predicting, scanning, and identifying main ideas and to develop reading fluency and encourage reading for pleasure. Reassure students from using a dictionary to find out the meaning of difficult words they don’t know or cannot guesstimate from texts.

Reading Comprehension 3 (Eng 213)                                                            2 Credits

This course develops reading skills, builds vocabulary, and makes reading more enjoyable. The reading passages are taken not only from magazines and newspapers, but also from popular classic stories. These extracts, specially adapted for learners of English, provide a practical way to introduce extensive reading into the classroom. It also helps students feel more confident reading in English, and develop strategies for reading difficult texts. Develop key reading skills such as predicting, scanning, and identifying main ideas.

Reading Comprehension 4  (Eng 218)                                                           2 Credits

 

This course develops reading skills, builds vocabulary, and makes reading more enjoyable. The reading passages are taken not only from magazines and newspapers, but also from popular classic stories. These extracts, specially adapted for learners of English, provide a practical way to introduce extensive reading into the classroom. Expose students to a variety of text types and genres to help them develop more effective reading skills. Students will engage in discussions to consider the issues raised by the passages. Students develop their writing skills, and feel more confident reading in English, and develop strategies for reading difficult texts. They develop key reading skills such as predicting, scanning, and identifying main ideas and to develop reading fluency and encourage reading for pleasure.

Listening and Speaking Subjects

 

The Listening and Speaking courses aim at providing adequate exposure of everyday conversations to the students in authentic native speakers’ language. The vocabulary items and necessary structure related to the areas of the skills prescribed for the courses need to be given to the students by the tutor. This forms an essential part of the courses. The success of all these courses depends on the resourcefulness of the tutor.

 

English Listening and Speaking 1  (Eng 104)                                                    2 Credits

 

The course Listening and Speaking I is expected to be used for giving pre-recorded listening input unit-wise and making the students repeat it. This course gives the students the ability to listen to authentic conversations by native speakers of English. It also gives them the opportunity to practice the four basic skills of English language; listening, speaking, reading and writing. These conversation inputs should be used for creating different situations of a similar nature making the students use the language freely which they have already been given. Each listen unit contains materials that support the English learners and enhance of their four language skills, developing the consciousness about the stress pattern of English language in Conversation. The students’ conversational ability will be systematically monitored by the tutor with the topics specified in this course.

English Listening and Speaking 2 (Eng 109)                                                    2 Credits

 

This is a continuation of the Listening and Speaking I the students had in the first semester. The expressions which exhibit polite manners in different contexts will be introduced and practised. The students should be familiarized with the concept of syllable so that they are able to break the word into different syllables and pronounce them as per the tradition of the language. It will build up their communicative competence. The English accent which is within their receptive range will be built up by means of identifying syllable stress in a word and word-stress in a sentence with rising or falling intonation. The students’ conversational ability will be systematically monitored by the tutor with the topics specified in this course. By the end of the semester, the students should be able to describe normal daily activities; ask questions about daily life activities; tell about different professions; and talk about hobbies, games, interests … etc.

English Listening and Speaking 3 (Eng. 214)                                                 2 Credits

 

This course gives the students the ability to listen to authentic conversations by native speakers of English. It also gives them the opportunity to practice the four basic skills of English language; listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each listen unit contains materials that support the English learners and enhance of their four language skills, developing the consciousness about the stress pattern of English language in Conversation. The students’ conversational ability will be systematically monitored by the tutor with the topics specified in this course.

English Listening and Speaking 4 (Eng 119)                                                     2 Credits

 

This course aims at consolidating whatever has been done in the previous three semesters. It is expected that students will be able to express their ideas with correct emotive tone in the given context. The tutor will have the opportunity to reinforce certain areas and structures which could be identified as difficult areas for a set of students. By the end of the course, the students should be able to participate and respond spontaneously to any discussion on the topic of common interest and use the language appropriately and befitting to the given context.

Translation (Eng 328)                                                                                          2 Credits

 

The course introduces students to what and how to translate. They will learn and practice lexical items/terms. Then students study the meaning of translation and literal translation grammatical terms and idioms, phrases fixed, which explains how to translate collocations problems proverbs. Introduce students to importance of translation in teaching, and lexical problems, how to translate, and what to translate.

Computer Assisted Language Learning (Eng 441)                                           2 Credits

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is intended to give students a broad view of computer-enhanced language teaching and learning. It will involve them in exploring a working theory of language learning environments, using and discussing existing and potential applications of computer technology in the language classroom. This module aims to familiarize the student with the basics of computer assisted language learning (CALL), beginning with a definition of CALL, its historical development and an overview of different types of programs. Different approaches to using CALL software in the languages classroom are explored, from whole-class teaching to distance learning.

Vocabulary Development (Eng. 443)                                                                  2 Credits

This course presents and explains some vocabulary items with a range of follow up activities to improve the students’ English. It teaches students some important words and phrases, but it also gives students information about vocabulary, plus ideas and techniques to help them learn vocabulary. This course aims at broadening students’ lexis, develop new strategies in learning vocabulary, and use their lexical store to develop the other skills: Learning and revising with this subject, keeping a vocabulary notebook, using a dictionary, learn new English language words and practice classroom language.

Morphology and Word-Formation (Eng 331)                                                  2 Credits)

 

This is an introductory course to the study of morphology and English word-formation. The course will establish foundations in morphological analysis, providing descriptive and analytical techniques for understanding the internal structure of words. These foundations will be used to solve problems in typologically different morphological systems linguistics, including morpheme-based morphology, word-based morphology, inflection versus derivation, and other word-formation processes will be explored. The course has three main sets of aims:

Seminar (Eng.  500)                                                                                         2 Credits

 

This is an introductory course to the study of seminars and presentations. In this course students will be introduced to different strategies and techniques of public speaking such as preparing and delivering good presentations, and other public speaking requirements. This course, also, empowers the students’ spoken skills by enhancing their listening and speaking skills. This introductory course aims to introduce students to the foundations of preparing presentation and delivering them in an effective and powerful way. This course also aims to develop the students’ oral and listening skills through using a standard course “Speak out” to strengthen students’ spoken English that they need when giving presentations.

 

Syntax (Eng. 329)                                                                                               2 Credits

This introductory course aims to introduce students to the foundations of English sentence structure. Its goal is to develop the students’ ability to understand and analyse sentence on the surface and deep levels. Students understand structure of English in a systematic, and a scientific way. Students are also given the opportunity to understand the structure of English sentences and develop analytical skills of English structure.

Linguistics I (Eng. 216)                                                                                       2 Credits

 

In this course students are introduced to the nature of language and the basic principles of linguistics theory. It then introduces two of the main sub-fields of linguistics. They are: phonetics and phonology. The first part of the course deals with the “language” in general. It provides definitions and features of language, as well as a basic question in the field of linguistics, which is “Is Linguistics a science?” It also introduces you to the functions of language in society. The second part introduces you to the linguistic branches of phonetics and phonology. It will also establish foundations in phonetic and phonological principles, providing descriptive and analytical techniques for understanding the sound system of the English language.

Linguistics II (Eng 221)                                                                                     2 Credits

 

Linguistic theory, After studying the nature of language, the basic principles of phonetics and phonology; students are introduced to remaining main sub-fields of linguistics. These are: morphology, Grammar, and semantics. The course aims to introduce students to some of the most important theoretical concepts .and empirical findings of modern linguistics, and to emphasize the connections between linguistics and the many other academic disciplines that are concerned with the study of language.

 

Phonetics 1 (Eng. 106)                                                                                        2 Credits

 

After a short introduction to pronunciation problems, the course provides explanations on how the speech organs work. After that students are introduced to the basic sounds and the difference between letters and sounds. Then, the course deals with each sound separately. Learners are provided with both receptive and productive practice. Audio components include cassettes and audio CDs.

Phonetics 2  (Eng. 112)                                                                                    2 Credits

 

Students are introduced to concentrate on different sound sequences and how they may have difficulty in stringing together two, three or four consonants with no vowel between Learners are provided with both receptive and productive techniques to master English sound system. Audio components include cassettes and audio CDs. The course aims to:

  1. improve students production of the spoken language . 2. help students practice some dialogues . 3. direct students with particular pronunciation difficulties .

Oral skills 2 (Eng. 330)                                                                                     2 Credits

This course at developing students speaking skills in different areas. Theoretically, students learn to know some English expressions used in some general conversations, and in academic register. Additionally, students will be able to compare between English and Arabic expressions used in daily life, and take part in some academic discussions. Practically, students learn to speak fluently in common English conversation and be able to discuss some academic topics in English.

English for Specific Purposes ESP (Eng. 442)                                                2 Credits

This course prepares students for various English verities and genres. It introduces them to different fields of knowledge from theoretical and descriptive backgrounds. Students understand the complexities of language and language learning. They come to a deep understanding for the notion of ESP.SP. students will be able to analyse the ESP learner’ needs and suggest better ideas for the needed ESP course with an appropriate content. In practical terms, students will be able to design the needed ESP course with an appropriate content.

Applied Linguistics (Eng. 326)                                                                           2 Credits                                                                            

The course provides a wide-ranging overview of the many and diverse issues in applied and the essential overview of Applied Linguistics. It starts by providing an how languages are learned. areas of enquiry in Applied Linguistics. Then, it introduces Followed by that an learning theories and language acquisition. introduction to the Learners and Second Language Acquisition/Learning Finally students are introduced to Language.

Introduction to English Literature (Eng. 220)                                                2 Credits

 

English literary works. It provides them with some exposes students to This course details about different literary eras as well as the study of some great literary works. It also develops students’ appreciation of literary works and makes reading more enjoyable. Students are provided a survey of different Literary areas, and to appreciate literary works. Students also gain an appreciation of the value of the short story and poetry.

Literature (Eng. 332)                                                                                      2 Credits

 

This course is the study of the structure and elements of the English novel. It focuses on how to read a novel analytically and critically. It not only sharpens students’ close-reading skills and deepens their appreciation for the emotional power of novels, but also connects novels to the larger world by providing a thorough introduction to novels’ authorial, cultural, and critical contexts. Also distinguishes the features of English poetry along with the works of major English poets. History & Varieties of English (Eng. 440)                                                    2 Credits

 

The course introduces students to the varieties and of situational English varieties. It also introduces them to the aspects of register as well as language notions and functions. It introduce the term ‘varieties of English’ to students as well as important labels and terms which are closely related to varieties of English.

Writing 3 (Essay Writing) Eng. 215                                                             2 Credits

The objective of this course is to teach the students the writing modes, rhetorical devices and language points required for academic success. Students are given the opportunity to explore their opinions, discuss their ideas, and share their experiences through written practice, writing short and/or 5-paragraph essays. Students are introduced to communication essays on different topics. The course helps students feel more confident while writing in English. It also helps them to understand rhetorical modes to develop strategies for writing efficiently. Students develop useful skills by using the prewriting techniques and editing and revising skills, and improve students’ ability to write coherent short essays and their written communication.

Writing 4 (Creative writing) (Eng. 220)                                                          2 Credits

 

The course discusses where creative writing comes from, the various forms it has taken, and why we teach and learn the arts of fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. It looks at creative writing in performance; as public art, as visual art, as literature and as an act of practice. Then, students practice writing about books/films and short stories community. The course helps students feel more confident while writing in English, and to the challenges of creative writing and practice writing short stories.

 

 

Writing 5 (Academic Writing) (Eng. 325)                                                       2 Credits

 

The aim of the course is to provide the student with a variety of suitable material for writing. The most important aim is to introduce the concept of Academic Writing and specifically to train the students to use the Academic Styles. Then students are introduced to paraphrasing, summarizing, quotations, and report writing. The course introduces students to the different academic styles, and understanding and interpreting the writing tasks. Also, it helps students practice interpreting information from diagrams and comparing data.

 

Methodology of Language Teaching (Eng. 326)                                             2 Credits

This course is an introduction to language teaching methodology which explores language teaching methods and recent methodological innovations. This course aims to introduce students to the teaching techniques and principles in teaching English as a L2 and FL. The course provides an overview of language teaching methodology. Students become aware of their own fundamental assumptions, values, and beliefs, and help them choose to teach differently from the way they were taught as well as expand their  repertoire of techniques .

Teaching English Language Skills (Eng. 434)                                                 2 Credits

 

This course is the essential guide for students as training language teachers. It helps Them understand how to teach English as a foreign language, to be successful as an English students, language teacher of both adults and young learners.

The course provides them with the tools, strategies and knowledge they need. This course shows students how to teach pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.

It also provides students with basic classroom suggestions for teaching the basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Then students are introduced to teaching young learners, business English and one-to-one teaching.

Teaching Practice   (منفصلة ومتصلة)التربية العملية (ت م 113- ت م 114 )

 

This course trains students to teach’. It helps them to understand the basic principles of working in a language classroom, how to plan successfully and how to use materials to make their lessons more interesting. The course helps students practice teaching English and prepares them for classroom management. It develops the awareness and skills students need to become better teachers.

 

Second Language Research Methods (Eng. 333)                                          2 :Credits

This course provides a clear, comprehensive, and authoritative guide to research methods

in second language. This course discusses the development of research questions and hypotheses, naturalistic and experimental research, data collection , and validation of research instruments. It introduce students to the preparatory stages of research, the components of research, research design and data collection procedures and analysis .

Graduation Project (م ج 114 )                                                                        2: Credits      

This course is about the practice and experience of doing research in education. It is aimed at less experienced students who are involved in small-scale research projects at college. It is designed to prepare students on to write a research paper. It also aims to provide support during their writing stage. In this course, students learn the stages of writing a research paper Practice,  keeping records and taking notes as well as practice gathering and interpreting data, and practice revision, referencing and avoiding plagiarism.
