Modification of Hot Mix Asphalt Using Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) for Hot and Arid Regions
Abstract
Permanent deformation or rutting is a primary failure mode of hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements, especially in hot and arid regions. The aim of this study was to achieve the viability of using Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) as a modifier of hot mix asphalt for alternative industrial asphalt in flexible pavement preservation material in hot and arid regions. The type of asphalt used was 60/70 pen. This research was conducted to get the difference in the strength and durability aspects of asphalt modified with EVA with several percentages, namely 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10%. All of the hot mix asphalt (HMA) was prepared based on Marshall Mix design properties in terms of the Marshall Stability Test (MS) to get optimum bitumen content, strength, and durability. The tests conducted were the Marshall Stability Test, the Indirect Tensile Strength Test (ITS) at different temperatures (20ºC, 40ºC, and 60ºC), and the Unconfined Compressive Strength Test (UCS) at 45ºC. The Marshal properties, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and Indirect Tensile Strength test (ITS) were conducted. The result showed that marshal stability and marshal quotient increase with an increase in the EVA modifier. However, Marshal Flow decreases when the EVA modifier is increased. All the values of unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and Indirect Tensile Strength test (ITS) increased with an increase in EVA modifier. Therefore, EVA could be used as an aggregate substitute for flexible hot mix asphalt in hot and arid regions because it is temperature tolerant and can prevent asphalt cracking.
