Modern Perspective of the Role of Higher Education Institutions in Local Development: A field Study on Sebha University
Abstract
The topic of local development and higher education has been dealt with individually in several studies, as well as the relationship between them, but most of these studies and research did not adopt the applied approach (Caniels & Bosch, 2010), this study comes as an attempt to find out the current status of the role of higher education institutions in Libya, it used the descriptive approach with regard to the theoretical aspect which is related to previous studies and research, and the applied approach by collecting its primary data by using a questionnaire distributed to a sample of faculty members at the Sebha University on local development practices (local development, concepts and values of citizenship, social development, environmental development). The results showed that the practices of local development by Sebha University are very weak, and there was no statistically significant differences could be credited to the variables of: sex - age - educational qualification - Experience – and Degree, with regard to local development and its dimensions, the results of the study were discussed and accordingly a set of recommendations were made to improving local development practices by Sebha University.
