Scientific Research Ethics Committee

Ethics are considered one of the most essential pillars of work and life in societies. They are a necessity for civilized life and a fundamental requirement for organizing and stabilizing society. Our noble religion mandates them, social customs acknowledge them, and they are framed by legislation and laws.

The Code of Ethics is broader and more detailed than a set of principles and rules contained in the law. It is built upon and elaborates on their applications and implications. It also includes matters that are not addressed in the legal text through religious, social, and prevailing cultural norms in society.

The profession of education is a noble profession as it plays a fundamental role in the growth and advancement of society. Therefore, its practice requires adherence to virtuous and noble ethics. Sebha University, like other universities, educational and research institutions, is concerned with building individuals and preparing them for their roles in life.

It has set among its goals the promotion of ethical values and an insistence on cultivating them in all its programs, policies, and strategies. The university is responsible for promoting and developing ethical commitment among all its employees.

Scientific research is considered one of the noblest activities that the human mind can engage in, in order to achieve progress and development for nations. It is the natural foundation for any civilizational advancement, especially in the modern era. However, some of this research may result in ethical dilemmas for individuals, their social environment, and the environment itself.

Therefore, many countries around the world have shown significant interest in ethical issues in scientific research, aiming to raise awareness about their importance among specialized researchers and the general public. This is done to ensure that scientific research and technological applications respect human rights, dignity, and freedom by establishing national ethics committees and developing national standards and laws in this field.

As a result, the National Committee for Biosafety and Biomedical Ethics was established in Libya in 2016 with the aim of promoting ethical values in scientific research.

In Sebha University, scientific research constitutes a fundamental pillar in the higher education system, in line with national requirements, scientific and technological advancements. It plays a crucial and essential role within this system to achieve the university’s vision of “leadership in education, scientific research, and community service.”

Based on this vision, the university strives to develop its programs under an ethical framework that ensures adherence to the principles and values of scientific research required by quality standards. It emphasizes ethical commitment in performance and relationships with others, in line with national and international standards.

This framework sets the general framework for the ethical principles and values that faculty members, researchers, and graduate and postgraduate students at Sebha University must follow. All parties involved in the research process should adhere to it to enhance the university’s reputable ethics of scientific research.

An Ethics Code for Scientific Research Preparation Committee was established at the university, as per the University President’s Decision No. 376 of 2018.
