About the University
The first nucleus on which the university was established was the Faculty of Education – Sebha Branch, which was established in 1976 under the University of Tripoli. In early 1983, Decision No. 187 of 1983 was issued by the former General Popular Committee regarding the establishment of Sebha University, making it an independent university to serve the municipalities of southern Libya.
Initially, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Sciences were established, followed by the faculties of Human Medicine, Agriculture, Engineering and Technology Sciences, Economics, and Accounting. The number of university faculties increased to twenty-two, distributed in southern regions, in addition to seven different research centers.
In 2020, the university obtained institutional accreditation from the National Center for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Educational and Training Institutions. This center is one of the main pillars of the Ministry for the reform and development of education in Libya. It is responsible for promoting a culture of quality, developing and improving local standards in line with international standards, accrediting educational and training institutions, and enhancing their outcomes.
